What is a hostel? Hostels & Pensions in Toledo are budget hotels. And just as hostels and pensions are throughout Spain, they are typically family owned and operated, clean, basic lodgings with small-ish rooms and, oftentimes, with ensuite bathrooms. Rooms with "shared" bathroom facilities are generally cheaper than those with private bathrooms. Many times, just as in Toledo, they are located in some of the most interesting, historical, and active parts of the city at very good prices. Don't confuse hostels in Spain with youth hostels, however. Youth-hostels are called "albergues juveniles" (or just "albergues") in Spanish while hostels are called "hostales", pensions are "pensiones".

WHERE to stay?: One should consider choosing a Toledo hostel somewhere inside the walls of the old city center, somewhere near the Cathedral or Plaza de Zocodover, the center of town, "Centro", around the Alcázar, or near the Puerta de Bisagra. Staying at a hostel INSIDE the walls of Toledo will likely give you a very different "feel" of Toledo than if you stay OUTSIDE the walls. Plus, since the city of Toledo stands on a hilltop, staying outside the walls will cause you to have to walk uphill to the city center or require you to take public transportation. Only you can deside which location best fits your needs in a hostel, but wherever you stay in Toledo the experience will likely change you forever.
