San Sebastian is called "Donostia" in the Basque language but outsiders, non-basques sometimes call it "San Se" for short. It's also one of the most elegant beachside cities in the Basque Country or "País Vasco". The long, wide La Concha Bay boardwalk along La Concha Beach and Ondarreta Beach is a pleasure at any time of the year.
I've compiled a fairly extensive collection of cheap lodgings in San Sebastian including hostels/"hostales", pensions, & youth hostels. One can read reviews and recommendations of several of San Sebastian's lodgings in the "Hostels & Other Lodgings" forum of MadridMan's ALL SPAIN Message Board. One should consider choosing a location somewhere in or near the old city center or "La Parte Vieja", somewhere near the Plaza Constitución, the center of town, "Centro", around the Buen Pastor Cathedral, the "Gros" area, somewhere around Monte Urgull, Playa de la Concha, or Playa de Ondarreta. Nearly all interesting places in the CENTRO and PARTE VIEJA are reachable on foot while other places like the scenic outlook from Monte Igueldo will likely require transportation by bus or taxi.
